10/4 |
Review of "On the Bridge" paragraphs -- focus on topic sentences and use of quotation marks.
No new stories...Types of Stories
No new characters....Archetypes = character type that reoccurs in many stories.
Archetypes
Pair characters on screen...
Now, create YOUR own pairs of character types (not the same types)...
create a google doc using images -- mix up at least 4 types of characters ...
HOW? Pick 2-3 Disney movies or teen movies or SIT coms... look for character types that share common traits and role ...
Try the Simpsons, Family Guy, Sponge Bob...
Or Cars, Mulan, and Finding Nemo...
YOUR choice -- but DON'T tell others what your pairings are -- if you do it right, they will get it!
|
1) REVISE your paragraph on "On the Bridge" for AWESOME topic sentence (and then awesome rest of paragraph)
2) Complete you Google doc for ARCHETYPES!
3) Find TWO words that incorporate roots on list 1-10 (in blue) Greek Roots-SET ONE
You may reference the following or any number of sources online:
http://www.empire.net/~merlin/greek.html
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0907013.html
Write out the DEFINITION of the found words (20 total) -- You must be able to explain why the Greek root is in that word. EX: Dent = tooth, Dentist = tooth doctor; trident = three spikes/teeth (and of course, Dentyne = sugar free gum that is safe for teeth!)* Brand names with Greek roots = extra credit :)

STUDENTS HAVE THIS ASSIGNMENT IN THEIR ENGLISH FOLDER titled MONSTROUS OARFISH
READ NEWS STORY about oarfish
http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-18-foot-oarfish-catalina-island-20131014,0,3591744.story
Then, look at AWESOME pictures!
Oarfish!
Imagine what people who came across this fish's carcass on the beach thought 3000 yrs ago. Describe this MONSTER from the sea as though you lived before "science" and scuba gear.
Now, create a myth about the oarfish -- either as monster or former human, transformed:
- Why did Poseidon create/transform this creature? What other god/dess was involved?
- Why does it not have scales?
- Why does it have a red dorsal fin and "fin-rays" on top of its head?
- What "lesson" or caution do we learn from the oarfish's story?
Your story MUST CONTAIN:
- Setting
- Poseidon & Another God/dess
- Conflict
- Bad behavior (not evil, just bad)
- Dialogue (characters must speak)
- A final warning or observation.
