The purpose of a review is to evaluate a work so that others know a) what YOU thought about it and why and b) whether they should try it or not.
We go on a 1-5 star scale here (1=terrible*; 3 = enjoyable, but not memorable; 5 = one of the best I've ever read)
*terrible reads should NEVER appear in your review because there is NO reason to finish an independent reading book you hate. A "1" means you did not bother to go to LMC to find a better read. Silly you!
Here are some student reviews from last year that were successful (not perfect, but showed real evaluation and did their job):
Selvie's
Aubrey's
First Quarter:
- The review should "hook" the reader in the first sentence (but NOT through a question).
- The review must make the genre (Adventure, Romance, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Drama, Horror, Suspense...), premise, and conflict clear
- The review must discuss the main character's (use their name) strengths and weaknesses
- The review must not contain any “spoilers” (critical information of the plot that ruins a surprise or gives away the ending).
- The review should make a recommendation for who would like to read the book (connect it to a similar read or story).
- The review should clearly rate the read 1-5 and GIVE reasons why it earned that grade and not another (strengths and weaknesses, pluses and minuses).
- The review should be at least 200 words
- The review should NOT contain any spelling or grammatical mistakes.
- The review should contain a quote from the text (spoken or description) connected to conflict
